The Canadian oil sands are among the world's largest hydrocarbon resources, but their energy and environmental profiles make them controversial. Canadian oil production is expected to continue growing through 2025, increasingly from oil sands (see Figure). Investment in the oil sands industry increased from $13 billion in 2010 to $16 billion in 2011. The USA imports almost two million barrels/day of oil from Canada—its largest source of imported oil—mostly from oil sands.
