Slawomir Stefan Rump was born on July 22, 1929, in Warsaw, Poland.During the Nazi occupation of Poland, he was an active member of Szare Szeregi (Grey Ranks), the Scout resistance organization. He was honored for editing an underground newspaper in the wake of the Warsaw Uprising (in the nearby town of Wlochy) on November 11, 1988 by President of the Polish Republic in Exile with a Commander's Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland,a Cross for Liberty and Independence with swords and a golden Merit He attended the Medical Faculty of Warsaw University and received his undergraduate degree in 1952 and Ph.D.in 1965 with the dissertation "Studies of the therapeutic activity of cinchocaine in acute intoxications with the isopropyl ester of methylfluorophosphoric acid."
