Thermal wave Characterization of Technical Layer systems Based on IR Detection Real technical layer systems, such as CVD and PVD films and plasma sprayed coatings have been attalysed with respect to the depth profile of their thermal p;w-perties, by using IR detection of thermal waves. Owing to surface roughness and friction wear, and due to the fact that such layers are slightly translucent both in the visible and in the infrared, the ;neasured data considerably deviate from the results expected for a re, o- or three-layer solid with smooth and opaque surface Nevertheless, useful information about the thermal and optical properties and the surfaces of technical layer systems can be obtained. The advantage of iR detection of thermal waves is that this method is most appropriate for remote sensing under industrial conditions, working absolutely contactless ami without am' sample preparation.
