Laser-based eye safe systems for measurements with ranges of some kilometers are of great interest for several applications (e.g. object detection, collision avoidance). By realising such a system effects are superimposed depending on the setup and the measuring method. Besides atmospherical transmission the properties of the emitter and the receiver are important [1-3]. Thus, the system performance can vary over a large range. System data provided by the manufacturers often refer to maximum performance under optimum conditions. Therefore, the real system performance is not described thoroughly enough. In this paper the influence of several parameters (optical power, target reflectivity, optics, atmospherical transmission, target size) on the system performance of an eye safe laser range finder (1574 nm wavelength) is investigated and discussed.
