This book chronicles many of the efforts that have been made by people in developed countries to try to solve the cleft lip and palate problem in developing countries. As such, it is certainly one of the best books on the subject in this sparsely published area. It is an excellent history of the subject with particular focus on the mission groups, such as Operation Smile and Rotaplast, that dominated our early efforts. The best described of these missions is that of the editors in their pioneering work in Sri Lanka. It traces what started as a traditional mission, then advanced into one of the most important research projects into facial growth in clefts, and finally began to extend into self-sufficiency of the Sri Lankans themselves. I congratulate the editors Mars and Sell for presenting the classic dilemma of the best growth occurring in the untouched adult cleft palate patient who unfortunately exhibits unintelligible, unremediable speech. The section on the cleft research done in Sri Lanka alone is worth the price of the book. The political, economic, and public health aspects of this work are thoroughly covered.
