Prior to the 2004 North Queensland Gas Pipeline (NQGP) project from Moranbah to Townsville, fauna management during pipeline construction projects in Australia was a relatively lower order consideration for both regulatory authorities and contractors. Impacts to native fauna during the construction process were largely inadequately addressed and fauna management not resourced in its own right. The project approval obligations for the construction of the NQGP required that open trenches be checked for fauna prior to lowering in commencing.
