Europe's Chemical Output Rises, Moves Closer to 2007 High

The European Union's (EU) chemical output rose 7% for the month of January, when compared with the same month in 2010, according to Cefic's newly published Chemicals Trend Report. According to Cefic's production index this January's production was 23.1% higher than the global recession low of December 2008. Consumer chemicals produc- tion for the month of January increased 9.3% compared to January 2010; with polymers up 6.5%; petrochemicals up 6%; basic organics up 5.9%; and specialty chemicals up 3.6%. Cefic also revealed that the EU achieved a record trade surplus for full year 2010 of ?47 billion ($67 billion), up 10.3% on the trade surplus in 2009.
