MONSANTO'S SECOND QUARTER BEATS ESTIMATES

Monsanto reported net income of $1 billion ($1.88/share) for its fis- cal second-quarter quarter ended February 28, 14% higher than the same year-ago period, and confirmed it is on track to meet its goal of mid-teens earnings growth. Sales increased 6%, to $4.1 billion, with both the company's seeds and genomics and agricultural productiv- ity segments posting volume gains. Analysts were expecting $1.84/ share, as reported by Thomson One (New York). Seeds and genomics gross profit gained 6%, to $2.1 billion. Sales increased 5%, to $3.4 billion, driven by global volume growth and a mix upgrade in the U.S.
