Successful salvage of right common iliac vein injury in a 10-year-old boy undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy.

A 10-year-old boy was brought to the Emergency Room of Taichung MetroHarbor Tung's Memorial Hospital on January 6, 2007 with the chief complaints of periumbilical pain with shift to right lower quadrant, nausea, and vomiting for 2 to 3 days. Physical examination revealed tenderness and rebounding pain over McBurney's point. Laboratory data and abdominal roetgenography were compatible with the clinical impression of acute appendicitis. After full explanations to the parents, the patient was sent to the Operating Room for laparoscopic surgery. Four trocars were used: two 10 mms at infraumbilical and suprapubic sites; one 5 mm at half way between infraumbilical and suprapubic sites; and another 5 mm at right upper quadrant. Dissection of the appendix and meso-appendix went on smoothly and the appendix was removed via the suprapubic trocar site.
