Father was a 20th century surgeon of genuine dedication, energy, and accomplishment. His career spanned the rise of modern general surgery in which he played a major role in improving the education of surgical residents and practicing surgeons. Although many senior readers will remember him as a dynamic, powerful, and sometimes overwhelming presence in the operating room, on rounds, as a moderator at national meetings, or giving oral examinations at the Boards, I think this modus oper-andi was used to instill and inspire surgical excellence.
