A 7-year-old girl has a 2-day history of epigastric and left-sided abdominal pain, increasing in severity over 24 hours. She was well before the onset of pain and had no previous episodes of abdominal pain. The patient was afebrile with normal vital signs with a weight of 61.4 kg. Her abdomen was soft and non-distended, but the patient demonstrated voluntary and involuntary guarding in the epigastric region as well as left-sided tenderness with deep palpation. She had active bowel sounds. Laboratory studies revealed a mild leukocytosis (white blood cell count: ll,800/muL).
