The general surgery residency at Orlando Health: past, present, and future.

Orange general hospital was established in 1918 in the once sleepy little town of Orlando, Florida (Fig. 1). By 1945 it had become the third largest private hospital in the state, and one of only a few to receive approval from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). In addition, it was one of only five Florida hospitals to be approved for internship by the American Medical Association. To help raise money for a new hospital in 1946, the name was changed to Orange Memorial Hospital, dedicating the new building as a war memorial to the men and women who served in World War II. In 1951 the American Medical Association gave the hospital permission to conduct residency training in medicine, urology, obstetrics/ gynecology, and surgery, making it one of the first teaching hospitals in Florida; and thus our program was born. With the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971, Orlando experienced tremendous growth.
