Fuel cells operate by the direct conversion of the chemical energy in a fuel to electrical energy without an intermediate combution stage. They offer the potential to achieve both high electrical generation efficiency and a high thermal efficiency in a combined heat and power (CHP) application with only minimal emissions of associated pollutants. This article provides a description of the first fuel cell installation in the southern hemisphere at the Australian Technology Park (ATP) in Sydney.
