LAST MONTH, WE LEARNED THE IMPORTANT ROLE HEELS PLAY INyour horse's hoof structure.As the flexible portion of the hoof, the heel contains suspension, support and shock-absorbing components. The deep digital flexor tendon, navicular bone, coffin bone and laminae are suspension components. Support components are the digital cushion, frogand horn tubules that form the hoof wall, which turn toward the apex of the frog to form the bars of the heel. The wedge-shaped frog lies between the bars and beneath the digital cushion. All of these suspension and support components complement each other. When the suspension and support components are healthy, the hoof will have total recall from impact, resulting in a balanced foot.While Dr. Ric Redden covered crushed heel syndrome last issue, this month we'll look at two other common hoof issues: contracted heels and pushed up heels.
