Control of rushes and thistles with a range of herbicides applied with a weed-wiper

The appearance of vegetation within environmentally-sensitive areas (ESAs) is often perceived by the public to be natural, but is in fact the result of management regimes adopted over time. The relatively recent proscribing of herbicides in such areas has led to problems with invasive weeds such as rushes and thistles. "Weed-wiper" technology (1) is being studied for the selective control of these weed species in areas of rough grazing, to give improvements in grass productivity and an increase in biodiversity, although only weed control is considered here.
