The concept of testing a product/package system for integrity, performance, and a number of other traits has been around for a long time. Those who thought through the process of delivering a quality product to their customer would normally conduct this testing by sending the product/package system on a test shipment, most notably through a major metropolitan hub of the postal system. War stories about test shipments through the postal sorting facility on Chicago's South side during the 1950s and 60s persist even to this date.
