Australia's newest thermal coal mine has become operational this week, delivering its first conveyor-load of coal bound for overseas markets. The Clermont Mine is managed by Rio Tinto for the Clermont Joint Venture (Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd, J-Power Australia Pty Ltd, JCD Australia Pty Ltd and Queensland Coal Pty Limited). In late February the mine uncovered its first glimpse of coal at a depth of around 105 metres, and this week the mine delivered its first 5000 tonnes of coal to the company's adjacent Blair Athol Mine.
