Pike River mine is underground metallurgical coal mine located on the west coast of the South Island, where coal production started by continuous miner on October 17, 2008. On 27th November an opening ceremony of the mine was held at the mine site. The operator of Pike River coal mine is Pike River Coal Co.,Ltd. (PRCC) of which major shareholders are New Zealand Oil & Gas (NZOG), as well as major Indian coke producers, Gujarat NRE Coke (GNCL) and Saurashtra Fuels Private Ltd. (SFL).
