Yield and nutritive value of awnless forage barley genotypes in the Region Lagunera of Mexico.

Twenty six (26) advanced awnless forage barley lines; commercial cultivars of oat (cv. Cuauhtemoc), triticale (cv. Eronga 83) and grain barley (cv. Cerro Prieto), and one awnless experimental line of bread wheat (AN-266-99) were evaluated during the autumn/winter of 2005-06 and 2006-07 in Madero municipality, Coahuila, Mexico. Dry matter production and other agronomic variables were measured on 2 sampling dates in each cycle. Forage nutritive value on each sampling date was also determined. Wheat, oat and triticale genotypes showed high nutritive values on the first sampling date due to their energy and protein contents, together with lower ADF [acid detergent fibre] and NDF [neutral detergent fibre] concentrations; however, these genotypes had lower dry matter yields than the awnless barley genotypes. On the second sampling date, the awnless barley genotypes maintained satisfactory nutritive value at stages later than the milky-dough stage through increased energy (NEl and NEm) and reduced fibre (ADF and NDF) contents.
