Poland's Senate establishes 2011 as the Year of Maria Sk?odowska- Curie, in order to promote awareness of her great contribution to the development of global science. Maria Sk?odowska-Curie is the only scientist in history to receive the Nobel Prize twice, once in physics (1903) for the discovery of radioactivity and once in chemistry (1911) for the discovery of polonium and radium and studies concerning the nature of these elements. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Pierre Curie, Maria Curie, and Henri Becquerel the Nobel Prize in Physics, in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint research on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel. Maria Sk?odowska-Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. The citation by the Nobel Committee was, in recognition of her services to the advancement of Chemistry by the discovery of the elements radium and polonium, by the isolation of radium and the study of the nature and compounds of this remarkable element.
