Dungannon-based Greiner Packaging, whose yogurt, cream, custard and dessert pots occupy fridges across the UK and Europe, has announced thatits UK site has achieved zero waste to landfill. The company, which makes more than 1.1 billion rigid plastic packaging units a year, achieved this strategic target eight months ahead of a 2012 deadline. CEO Jarek Zasadzin-ski commented: "As the first plant in the Greiner Packaging International group to reach this goal, we are very proud of this achievement."Greiner has focussed on a "reduce, reuse, recycle" methodology for some time. Meeting the zero landfill target has saved around £150,000 annually, plus a reductionof at least 50% in the number of skips used. Savings have accrued through reduced landfill tax and the recycling of waste materials such as plastics, metals, wood, cardboard and paper with outside contractors.
