CONVENTIONAL AND NONCONVENTIONAL FISHING TECHNIQUES USED BY RURAL FOLK IN MANDAL VALLEY, PAURI GARHWAL, UTTARAKHAND

Mandal is an important river of Garhwal Himalaya, which abode.colourful fish fauna. The rural folk are dependant on this river for protein rich animal diet. The paper describes some fishing and overfishing methods commonly by the folk. A large numberof rivers, rivulets and streams form a vast network in the Garhwal region and abode a large number of indigenous fish species. Mandal River is situated in the Central Himalayan zone in the Uttarakand state of India. The village folk mainly depends on this river for their livelyhood. Badola & Singh (1977) reported some of the fishing techniques used mainly in Alaknanda valley. Rautela (1999) reported these techniques in Khoh valley. In Mandal valley we have found some modifications used by the local people. Hence, it was considered desirable to publish it in scientific periodical.
