As unemployment, gas prices, inflation and foreclosures all rose at middle-class killing rates, the presidential election around the time of the Republican convention devolved into a bridge-to-nowhere debate over lipstick on pit bulls. The pointless prattle stopped only when, like drunken drivers, investment banks and insurance firms began crashing on Wall Street.
