The unique human bias toward progressively improving precision has impelled man to explore and master the Stereotactic realm. With respect to human anatomy, difficulties arise when the surgeon wants to "see" beyond what is available in the real-time surgical field. After the advent of x-ray technology, general surgery, and intra-cranial surgery, surgery became "image guided" beyond the guidance of understood clinical anatomy and physiology. Using conventional x-ray images requires the ability to interpret shadows with respect to locating anatomical structures and to identify reference points (e.g., in the case of the ventricular system, which references the anterior and posterior commissural planes).
