FIRST UK USE FOR TOTAL ARTIFICIAL HEART

Cambridge, UK - Forty-year-old Matthew Green became the first British person to be fitted with a Total Artificial Heart on 4 Aug 2011. The TAH device, from US medical device maker Syncardia Systems Inc., is based on the Jarvik 7 Heart of the 1980s. The device, weighing only 160g, uses ventricles made from a polyurethane biomaterial, and has an external battery, compressed air pump and flexible blood sack to pump blood around the body.
