MgO-Cr_2 O_3 refractories have superior corrosion resistance at high temperature and are used for secondary refining furnaces such as AOD, VOD, RH, etc. The composition of the slag formed in such furnaces varies according to the operating conditions, containing a large quantity of CaB_2, or Al_2 O_3 sometimes. For example, CaO-CaB_2-Al_2 O_3 slag is formed in the reduction stage by Al addition in AOD or VOD~1), or the desulfurization operation in an LF or RH~(2)3)). Under these conditions, the wear of MgO-Cr_2 O_3 bricks tends to increase, compared with the case of conventional CaO-SiO_2(-FeO) slag~4). The results of corrosion tests using CaO-CaB_2-Al_2 O_3 and SiO_2-CaO-Fe_2 O_3 slags, in which the characteristics of the reaction mechanism between slag and MgO-Cr_2 O_3 bricks were evaluated, are discussed in this paper.
