In an important recent study, Lai et al.examined the impact of a caveolin-1 gene deletion on the amplitude of muscle contractility mediated by nerve stimulation and car-bachol in detrusor muscle strips obtained from 3- and 12' month-old male mice. Detrusor underactivity (DU), which has been defined as a contraction of reduced strength and/or duration, resulting in prolonged bladder emptying and/or a failure to achieve complete bladder emptying within a normal time span, is a remarkably common problem among frail older adults with incontinence or other voiding difficulties.
