Residency training was established in tfie United States by William Halstead at the beginning of the 20th century. During the ensuing century, little changed in the training schemes, although medicine and surgery changed greatly. As a response to the Libby Zion legal case in New York and a call from organized medicine and citizens groups to address resident fatigue and stress, the work hours and responsibilities of residents were significantly altered at the beginning of the 21st century. It has been 9 years since the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education mandated the national regulation of resident work hours by instituting the "80-hour work week."
