Traditionally, the world of academia has relied largely on peer review when appraising the merit of an individual faculty member, generally during deliberations for promotions or for admission into elite academic societies. However entrenched in our academic society the peer-review process might be, it face's harsh criticism on the grounds of its relative secrecy and subjectivity and the perceived notion that the process can be unduly influenced by politicking and gamesmanship. As such, much interest has been generated in finding other, more objective methods to appraise academicians' contributions to their field. Although no single measure can account for every facet of an individual's value to a program or department, many would agree that the proclivity to publish serves as one indicator of productivity.
