Bloodsucking arthropods transmit many diseases world-wide,the most important of these being malaria and dengue fever in the tropics,West Nile Virus in the United States,and Lyme disease in Europe and the United States.Malaria alone causes nearly three million deaths a year.About 264 persons died in the United States in 2003 after being infected with West Nile Virus.Insect bites also cause skin irritation,allergic reactions,and secondary infections.Among important measures for personal protection,repellents can be used at any place and time.The WHO recommends repellents as protection against malaria due to increasing resistance of Plasmodium falciparum(Welch)to anti-malarial drugs(e.g.chloroquin).The widely known and frequently employed compound diethyl-m-toluamide(DEBT)was discovered in 1954.Traditionally,the major development issue of new compounds has been increased efficacy.As a result,formulations have tended to be sticky and have unpleasant odors.
