Comment on: 'Mesolithic agriculture in switzerland? A critical review of the evidence' by W. Tinner, E.H. Nielsen and A.F. lotter

The recent article by Tinner et al. (2007) restates the views of Erny-Rodmann et al. (1997) and Gehlen and Scho¨n (2003) regarding the possible existence of pre-Neolithic farming based on palynological evidence. Thus the idea that arable farming commenced already in the Mesolithic in Central Europe is put forward again despite the fact that, as recently argued by myself, the evidence to support such a hypothesis is, at best, weak (Behre, 2007). Given the import of what is proposed, such a proposition is unjustified if the whole body of available evidence is taken into account.
