The U.S. coal industry will benefit from robust metallurgical coal demand and improved steam coal trade but natural gas displacement remains a challenge, according to a report published by Fitch Ratings. Recent acquisition activity and investments by coal companies have been driven by desire to increase exposure to met coal, which is in tight supply, and export markets, where demand is growing, Fitch noted.
