Electric power-sector coal consumption for the first half of 2010 was 4.8 percent higher than the comparable period in 2009, and EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook expects that growth to continue. Projected coal consumption in the power sector will increase by 5.3 percent in 2010, the outlook states. Despite an expected 0.4-percent increase in electricity consumption in 2011, fossil fuel-fired electricity generation is projected to decline, primarily because of forecasted rises in hydroelectric and wind generation. Power-sector coal consumption is forecasted to remain relatively flat.
