Not so easy to differentiate when a cut is truly a cut in current market

It's difficult to identify exactly what has been earmarked for idling or reduced production. It's maybe even more difficult to properly judge the extent to which a "cut" is a "cut." Alpha Natural Resources appears set to take 3 million tons off line. Cleveland-Cliffs will take out 1 million tons from the Pinnacle mine. Patriot Coal's Jupiter mine idle is worth another million tons, as is Foundation Energy's Laurel Creek move. While Patriot also figures to knock down 900,000 or so Black Oak tons, plans to add more production elsewhere make it difficult to properly judge the impact. Some 500,000 tons of contractor coal will be taken out of the Rock Lick stream.
