Bad quality practices arc as much the cause of the collapse of the auto manufacturing industry as a slump in sales figures, according to the new US President. At the end. of 2008 UK car sales were down 11 per cent, in the US by 16 per cent and. in Japan by 22 per cent, causing a worldwide slump in atilo manufacturing. US President Barack Obama, while announcing a loan of 1 7.4 billion US dollars to save General Motors (CM) and Chrysler from bankruptcy, said this 'necessary step' should not allow the auto giants to 'squander this chance to reform bad management practices'. The US loans to GM and Ford were made on the condition that the companies restructure and prove their viability by 31 March.
