The city is a tight-knit club dedicated to making its mainly white, young, male members as much cash as is humanly possible, I know this because I spent 12 years slaving away in the square mile with the sole aim of receiving ever bigger bonuses. You do not go into a city job to save the planet, fulfil your creative ambitions or enjoy yourself. You go to make money and this can be a very dangerous mentality when city boys are willing to break rules to fulfil their own greedy ambitions, given that banks are so vital to the econom. The city is incredibly competitive and its workers often base their self-worth on how much cash they make. It's a hire and fire world and I was frequently told by senior colleagues that the good times were going to end at any moment. Combine those two assumptions with a bonus system that rewards a mere 12 months performance and only ever gives you a portion of the profits you appear to have made while never taking cash off you for losses you've accrued and it is clear why short-term reckless gambling is the name of the game.
