New figures published by the Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) Small Business Service (SBS) have shown an increase of around 260,000 organisations operating at the start of 2004. The minister for industry and the regions, Alun Michael, welcomed the net rise in the UK's business population across the UK. The latest statistics show this to be the highest year-on-year increase in the business population since the figures started in 1995.
