Communication. How could anything seemingly so simple be so challenging - in both personal relationships or work environments? Yet so few organisations seem to get it right. Communication can often either be an enabler or inhibitor to an organisation's success. Communication "within an organisation is much like the flow of blood through the arteries of the human body carrying nutrients to the extremities, and ensuring proper functioning throughout. Yet the build up of cholesterol on the walls of the arteries can begin to restrict blood flow and ultimately reduce human performance. Failure to effectively communicate often leaves staff in the dark. Where the organisation is going long term, how it is performing short term or how staff efforts link up to any of it often remains a mystery. It is often a case of benign neglect. Nonetheless, lack of communication or 'communication by accident' can often leave staff feeling disconnected and demotivated. 'Team' is a good acronym for 'together everyone accomplishes more'. The challenge is that there is no 'together' without communication. Some organisations are trying to find new and better ways to communicate business improvements to staff and customers, two key stakeholder groups.
