In the last 50 years the UK has established a significant body of knowledge in leadership that is now used internationally. Professor John Adair, speaking at the ninth annual leadership conference in September cited a global leadership development strategy as a reflection of the importance placed on developing global leaders today. He spoke of the need for good leaders but also leaders for good. Adair predicted that there would be a global faculty for leadership within the next ten years. He claimed the key to leadership is 'why is it that one person is accepted as a leader in a group rather than anyone else? Professor Adair suggested that the answer was a blend of three categories: the qualities or traits expected or required by the group, which includes the generic qualities of enthusiasm and integrity the situation, emphasising the importance of knowledge in leadership, where the one with greatest knowledge is likely to take the lead role personal charisma
