A statistical audit of Harold Shipman's clinical practice between 1974 and 1998 has discovered that he recorded 236 more patient deaths at home than similar doctors, raising questions over why this disparity was not discovered sooner. The serial killer, convicted of murdering 15 patients, is now thought to have killed up to 297 patients during his 24-year career. The statistics were highest among women over 75. The health secretary, Alan Milburn, ordered the clinical audit after Shipman was convicted in January 2000.
