Hurt by the strong Canadian dollar and damaging fires at two mills, the largest newsprint maker on the North American West Coast, Catalyst Paper, reported soaring second quarter losses this week. Catalyst's second quarter net loss was C$47.4 million on sales of C$297.8 million, against a net loss of C$12.9 million on sales of $303.6 million during the first quarter. Production at the company's Snowflake, AZ, and Powell River, BC, mills was affected by extended maintenance downtime and by fires at both mills during the quarter.
