Canadian companies lost C640 million in 2Q, C1.3 billion in 1H 09; most showed sequential earnings improvement

Canadian forest products and pulp and paper companies had their 19th unprofitable quarter in a row in 2Q as recession-induced demand declines, weak prices and input cost pressures wreaked havoc on the industry. A stronger Canadian dollar also helped erode companies' profitability in the USA and export markets.
