Gorham Paper is among Northeast operations to curtail from energy costs

Due to high natural gas costs in the US Northeast, Gorham Paper and Tissue CEO Michael Cummings this week said the firm would reduce output at the mill in New Hampshire and layoff 20 to 50 workers. The reduced output is expected through March. The operation includes a new tissue paper machine, which is expected to run full-time, as well as another tissue paper machine and a PM that makes uncoated freesheet (UFS) lightweight offset to packaging grades, with total capacity of 165,600 tons/yr. Output will be off-and-on depending on natural gas costs and demand for the second tissue PM and the UFS one.
