Pulp mills in eastern Canada currently enjoy the lowest prices for spruce/fir sawmill chips in more than a decade due to favorable winter logging weather and continued improvement for lumber sales that bolstered availability of both chips and round-wood for softwood-consuming mills. Spruce/fir sawmill chips - the predominant furnish for the region's pulp and paper producers - now average C$98/odmt (fob sawmill) in Quebec and the Maritime Provinces, down a full CS22/odmt from third quarter, 2011, according to RISI's International Woodfiber Report.
