After seven-month, $70 surge, OP pricing for US mills calms while OCC rises gently, pulp subs-CGS take dip

After a surge since January that saw major grade prices rise by $25 on average and as high as $70/ton on one of the materials, recovered paper price levels at US mills for this month calmed for the first time in 2011. Pulp substitutes, sorted (postconsumer) white ledger (SWL), and coated groundwood sections all declined $5-10, while levels held across the country on high grades led by office paper (OP). Even so, however, the biggest-volume US recovered paper material, old corrugated containers (OCC), rose about $5/ton in three key markets for containerboard in the Midwest, Southeast, and Southwest, and averaged almost $180, up $18 in the last two months, and up almost $55 in the last 12 months, according to PPI Pulp & Paper Week's monthly pricing.
