DURING THE LAST DECADE, the landscape for the global containerboard markets shifted dramatically. Demand in the developed markets (North America, Western Europe, Japan and Oceania) stagnated, while demand in the rest of the world expanded nearly 9% per year between 2001 and 2010. Capacity expansion followed demand growth, which had a significant impact on global trade patterns. However, for the containerboard market the biggest impact of the capacity shift toward the developing markets was on the cost front Most of the new capacity was recycled based, and this was a key driver in the run-up in costs for many recovered paper grades during the last five years.
