STORA ENSO VEITSILUOTO,located just 120 km south of the Arctic Circle in Kemi,northern Finland,has long been a front-runner in implementing new maintenance concepts and technologies.In the early 1980s,for example,the facility installed automated lubrication systems and condition monitoring equipment to improve overall equipment reliability and thereby increase machine uptime.The mill is also one of the pioneers of outsourcing.In 1998,Stora Enso created a new maintenance company called Fortek that took over responsibility for maintenance at its pulp,paper and sawmills in northern Sweden and Finland -Kemijarvi,Pankakoski,Uimaharju and Oulu,as well as Veitsiluoto.Fortek provides full service contracts to all these plants.
