How To Qualify A Disk Stylus On A 3-Axis Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM)

If the most popular CMM stylus was determined by the most questions it generated, the disk stylus would win in a landslide. What is a disk stylus? It's a spherical stylus with just a portion of the sphere. The disk is what remains after an amount is removed from opposite sides of a sphere (Figure 1). The disk is fixed to a stem with a threaded base which, in turn, is attached to the CMM's sensor. The diameter is that of the original sphere. The thickness is specified by the designer. Why use a disk stylus? It offers an efficient way to access certain cylindrical features. Often, a disk stylus is the only way to reach these features. Q-Mark makes dozens of specially designed disk styli each year for our clients. Most are used to measure long cylinders and/ or ID grooves.
