Tembec,Inc.'s Chetwynd,B.C.,pulp mill ramped up bleached chemithermome-chanical pulp production after investing CUS20 million and about four months of work on the facility.The 160,000-mtpy facility began refining wood chips in the first week of February,a company official said,adding that its costs were down CUS150-USl60/tonne compared to when it was managed by Louisiana-Pacific Corp.That was a marked improvement over Tembec's earlier estimate that it would reduce the facility's cost of production by US125-US150/tonne.Tembec said lowering the mill's use of water,efficiently using its bark boiler,and reducing labor costs accomplished the reductions.Tembec plans to raise Chetwynd's capacity by 55,000 to 215,000 mtpy,but hasn't yet installed the low-consistency refiners needed to boost its capacity.
