India ranks second in terms of fruit production in the world after China. During 2013-14, India produced 88.97 million tonnes of fruits from an area under cultivation of 7.22 million hectares. In Punjab a total area of 0.77 lakh hectares was under fruits during the year 2013-14 of which kinnow, orange, malta, citrus, guava, amla, pear, mango and grapes are the main fruits grown in Punjab. Punjab is third largest state in terms of production of citrus in the country. To improve working in orchards andto reduce labour, mechanization is being emphasized. Financial aid for new machines is also being given under National Horticulture Mission.
